Introduction
Micronutrient deficiency, often called "Hidden hunger" is a significant public health challenge in many developing countries, including India. Despite economic progress, deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, like iron, iodine, vitamin A, and zinc continue to affect large segments of the population, leading to severe health issues, impaired cognitive development, increased susceptibility to infection, and decreased productivity.
Food fortification has emerged as a cost-effective and sustainable strategy to address these nutritional deficiencies on a large scale. Fortifying staple foods like rice, salt, and oil with essential micronutrients can significantly improve the nutritional status of vulnerable populations without requiring changes in their dietary habits. As India continues to combat malnutrition, there is a critical need to unite science policy and innovation to scale up for fortification initiatives.
The proposed "National Conclave on Food Fortification: Linking Academia, Industry, and Public Sector to Address Micronutrient Malnutrition", will center around the theme of working towards a healthier, sustainable, and inclusive world– aiming to engage key stakeholders, including representatives from the private sector, government, industry, international organization, research, academic institutions, and practitioners. This conclave aims to foster a multi-stakeholder dialogue paving the way for coordinated actions that will strengthen food for deviation efforts across the country. By aligning scientific research with policy frameworks and innovative practices, we can significantly advance the fight against micronutrient nutrition, improving the health and wellbeing of millions.
